Rachael Birkenhauer, Owner, IBCLC, RLC, CNA

My name is Rachael, and I opened LCS eight years ago in an effort to expand breastfeeding support in Wilmington. I am a mother, first and foremost to my 12 year old son and my 10 year old daughter. My spouse and I moved here from Ohio 13 years ago, and immediately found out we were expecting. Being away from family during such a fragile time made realize how much as women, we need so much support but so little is out there.
I believe all families should have access to lactation support and I am so proud to be the longest running lactation private practice in Wilmington. I enjoy continuing my education as new lactation research is constantly surfacing in this ever evolving field!
I began as a La Leche League Leader, a CLC ( Certified Lactation Counselor,) and Certified Peer Counselor through our local Health Department. I have gone on to receive additional certifications in Maternal and Infant Assessment for Breastfeeding and Human Lactation as well as Tongue Tie Assessment and Care. I went on to pass my Boards and became an IBCLC in 2019 and to further my assessment skills became a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant,) in 2022.
My work in the community has led me to be on the Board for The Port City Breastfeeding Project, I founded The No-Thanks Bank which now partners with Humanity-Now  assisting with the relief in Greece for nursing Syrian Refugees.
In my spare time, I like to pretend I have a green thumb in my garden, paint and go to the beach with my family. I have a blast as a Girl Scout Leader, being in nature and teaching young girls they can do and be anything they set their minds to!

My family and I moved to Wilmington, NC a little over 2 years ago. My husband was a Marine and we
had the opportunity to live all over the world prior to settling down in Wilmington. I’ve had the pleasure
of helping so many families in our military community in their breast/chest feeding journeys. Military life
can be difficult when you are forced to be so far from family support, and oftentimes, our friends
become our family.
I have a Master of Public Health Nutrition and a Master of Science in Kinesiology. I have been a
Registered Dietitian since 2004 and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 2009. I
realized during my dietetic internship that my true passion was breast/chest feeding support. I love
empowering families to meet their breastfeeding goals.
Previously I have worked for the WIC Overseas program and the Onslow County Health Department’s
Breastfeeding is Best program. I have also taught online nutrition courses for Arizona State University
and Craven Community College.
I am the mother to three amazing daughters whom are 11, 14 and 16 years old. Man, does time go by
fast! I breastfed each of them for 22, 19 and 17 months, respectively. I encountered some of the
challenges that many face in their breast/chest feeding experiences, even with all my education and
training. I know firsthand how vital it is to have reliable and compassionate support to meet your
breast/chest feeding goals.
When I am not running a “taxi” service for my girls to all of their after school activities, I enjoy
exercising, reading, cooking, taking walks with my two dogs, and spending time with my family.
I am excited to partner with Rachael Birkenhauer to continue to serve our community with
compassionate, knowledgeable, and research-based lactation support!
