Rachael Birkenhauer, IBCLC, RLC
I am a mother, first and foremost just a mom!
My spouse and I moved here from the Midwest eleven years ago and immediately found out we were expecting. Being away from family during such a fragile time made me realize how much we, as women, need all the support but so little is out there. That baby is now an 11 year old, who I breastfed before he weaned himself at eight months. ( oh boy do I wish someone had told me about paced Bottle feeding back then, ha!) I also have an eight year old daughter who breastfed until eighteen months . I am a Certified Peer Counselor; mother to mother connections are my savior in counseling as I can relate to 99% of what you're saying (and thinking!) Breastfeeding is a journey and my journey led me to help families in theirs.
I opened Lactation Counseling Services six years ago in an effort to expand breastfeeding support in Wilmington. Achieving my Certification as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), in 2014. My passion grew for helping mothers accomplish their breastfeeding goals and normalizing breastfeeding for the next generations! In 2015, I completed our local Peer Counseling Certification Course, focusing on our local WIC and other resources in our community. I've gone on to receive Certifications in Maternal and Infant Assessment for Breastfeeding and Human Lactation and Tongue Tie: Comprehensive Assessment and Care. I am most proud of my accomplishment that took five years to complete. Recently sitting for the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Exam and becoming an IBCLC.
I believe all parents should have access to lactation support whether in a group setting or privately in a space of their choosing. I am proud to be one of the longest running lactation practices in Wilmington, NC.I enjoy continuing in my lactation education as new research is constantly surfacing.
In the beginning of 2015 I founded The No-Thanks Bank. We have recently partnered with Humanity-now.org to assist in the relief effort for breastfeeding Syrian refugees. Collecting new or gently used breastfeeding and baby items for families in need and getting them to Greece.
I am a member of The North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition, on the Board of the local organization The Port City Breastfeeding Project , and a local La Leche League Leader.
In my spare time, I like to paint, pretend to have a green thumb and collect shells at the beach with my two kids and spouse. I have a blast as a local Brownie Girl Scout Troop Leader, being in nature and showing young girls they can do anything they put their mind to!
